Stunning Portraits of Reindeer People Living In Mongolia

Photographer and scholar Hamid Sardar-Afkhami has captured some stunning portraits of nomadic tribes in northern Mongolia. With a Ph. D. from Harvard, Sardar is a scholar in Mongolian and Tibetan languages and probably the best person to document the unique life of the Dukha people who depends on herds of migrating reindeer for their existence.

The population of Dukha people now remains to only 44 families or between 200 and 400 individuals. According to estimates there were about 2,000 reindeer in In the 1970s, the number has dwindled to only 600 now. The Dukha people use reindeer for various purposes including riding, breeding, milk, cheese and also for hunting.
